Overview

Rice Marsh Lake Water Quality Treatment ProjectThe City of Chanhassen is partnering with the Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek Watershed District to install a stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) within Rice Marsh Lake Park. The BMP is called a Kraken Filter and would be installed underground. Stormwater from the downtown Chanhassen area that drains to the lake would now pass through the system, which contains a series of chambers and various filters that would remove up to 63% of Total Phosphorus and 85% of Total Suspended Solids, both of which are pollutants which negatively impact the water quality within Rice Marsh Lake.

This project results from the Watershed District’s 2016 Use Attainability Analysis, which identified the need for a water quality improvement project within Rice Marsh Lake and Lake Riley. Many BMPs, such as an iron-enhanced sand filtration basin, a subsurface gravel bed wetland, and a modular wetland system, were analyzed and considered.
