Responsibilities & Services

The primary task of the Building Inspection Division is to provide for the city's health, safety, and welfare through the administration of building and fire codes. The department is responsible for:

Permit issuance and inspections of buildings, plumbing and mechanical systems, fire sprinkler and alarm systems, and individual sewage treatment systems
Plan reviews
Responsible for inspections of existing buildings for fire code violations, and administration of septic tank and RPZ maintenance programs

Our office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Feel free to call the Building Inspections Division at (952) 227-1180 with any questions.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Yes. Fence permits must be applied for online. View fence installation information.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

A building permit and engineered design is required for a retaining wall if the wall is over 4 feet tall, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. The retaining wall may not encroach in the drainage of the property. Contact the City of Chanhassen Engineering Department at (952) 227-1160 regarding drainage issues. Retaining walls less than 4 feet tall require a zoning permit to ensure zoning compliance.
