Overview & Services
The Public Works Department manages and maintains the city's infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, water, sewer, and drainage systems. Public Works serves the community through water and street maintenance, engineering, surface water resources, and GIS mapping.
The department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of:
- Sewer & Water Maintenance: The city is proud to produce, deliver, and dispose of potable water to serve our residents. Much goes on behind the scenes to provide this service.
- Street Maintenance: The city is responsible for maintaining more than 113.5 miles of local streets. Duties include street sweeping, pothole patching, snow removal, and more.
- Surface Water Resources: Chanhassen has an abundance of surface water resources, which include lakes, streams, ponds, and wetlands. Duties include managing the city's Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP), water quality, erosion/sediment control, and flood management.
- Engineering & GIS: The department provides contract administration and supervision of consultant engineering services for sewer, water, and street projects, as well as administrates the city's Pavement Management System and sump pump program, reviews building permits, performs speed and traffic count studies, and concerns relating to the city's streets, water, sanitary sewer, and drainage.
