Overview
Chanhassen has 12 Lakes that provide the community with aesthetic, environmental, and recreational value. There are seven recreational development lakes and five natural environment lakes. Several parks on or near these recreational waters provide boat ramps, fishing access, swimming beaches, trails, and picnic areas.
Eutrophication
Lake eutrophication is the process of plant growth, mainly algae stimulated by nutrient enrichment. Excessive nutrients in our lakes can cause accelerated eutrophication and lead to detrimental effects such as algae blooms and fish kills. Excessive nutrient levels in lakes are caused by increased runoff from development that carries fertilizer from yards and agricultural fields, grass clippings, leaves, and other pollutants. Nutrients can also be released from the substrate and re-suspended in the water column. Eutrophication is one of the most significant water quality concerns in the Metropolitan Area.

Slow-No-Wake Ordinance
High water levels can create stabilization and erosion issues in lakes, streams, and rivers. To protect our local water resources, the City of Chanhassen has adopted rules that impose Slow-No-Wake Restrictions on Lotus Lake, Lake Lucy, Lake Minnewashta, and Lake Susan. The Chanhassen City Ordinance outlines the requirements for Slow-No-Wake areas on Chanhassen’s lakes. City staff partner with other local agencies to monitor the lake levels, and the City Engineer determines when the Slow-No-Wake Restrictions take effect and when they are lifted.
