Overview
The Chanhassen Fire Department is a combination fire department utilizing full-time, part-time, and paid-on-call (POC) firefighters to serve the city's residents and businesses. In addition, the department also responds to mutual aid requests to our neighboring departments, typically for more significant incidents such as structure fires, grass fires, and other emergency management events.
The department currently responds to an average of 1,200 calls per year. The usual recruitment cycle is in the winter of each year.

Requirements
- Candidates must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
- Attend a minimum of 20% of all paged general callouts within a three-month period.
- Work a minimum of 28 hours of duty crew a month, including two twelve-hour shifts 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. and one four-hour shift on Saturday/Sunday. Members are encouraged to work more hours to fill vacancies and gain experience in the fire service.
- Attend mandatory training as assigned by the department. (Usually one Monday evening a month).
- Candidates must be able to complete courses for Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, and Hazmat Operations for certification (paid by the department).
- Candidates must be able to complete EMR or EMT course for certification (paid by the department).
- Candidates are required to live within 15-20 minutes from Station 1 (7610 Laredo Drive).
- Candidates must pass a pre-placement physical agility test, medical physical, and psychological assessment before working.
- A fingerprint criminal background check will be conducted if you receive a conditional offer.

- Current Firefighter and EMS experience.
Benefits
Members receive pay for all duty crew hours, callbacks, training, and events. All members are enrolled in a retirement program managed by the Chanhassen Relief Association.
The department participates in many community activities and hosts various social events for the members and their families.
Application Process
A significant time commitment is involved for members, especially in the initial year of employment, completing all the training requirements. Your family or spouse (if applicable) should be on board with your decision to join, as this will also affect them.
You will be contacted to attend an orientation meeting to receive additional information about the department and the job details. Those candidates that decide to stay in the process will be scheduled for a physical agility test and a formal interview.
The Fire Chief will make the final selection of candidates for open firefighter positions at the recommendation of the interviewing committee. The candidates will receive a conditional offer and must complete and pass a background check, medical examination, and psychological assessment. Tentative Fire Academy and EMS Course dates run from April - December 2024, two evenings a week with additional weekends.
