Chicken Permits
Overview
On May 24, 2021, the Chanhassen City Council adopted Ordinance 671, amending Chanhassen City Code Chapter 5, Animals and Fowl, and Chapter 1, General Provisions, concerning keeping chickens. On March 11, 2019, the Chanhassen City Council adopted Ordinance 639, amending Chanhassen City Code Chapter 4, license, permit, and administrative fees; Chapter 5, animals and fowl; and Chapter 20, Zoning, concerning keeping chickens.
Online Permitting
Effective January 1, 2024, all permits must be applied for online. Click the 'Submit Application' button at the bottom of the page to access our application portal through BS&A.

Supporting Documentation
The following documents MUST be submitted along with the Chicken Permit Application:
- Survey of property showing proposed chicken coop and run.*
- A notarized statement declaring that the applicant has informed all adjoining neighbors of their intent to keep chickens.
- If governed by a Homeowners Association (HOA), a notarized statement declaring that the applicant has informed the HOA shall be provided. Be aware HOA covenants can be more restrictive than city rules.
*Coop and run must be kept in the rear yard, setback 25 feet from adjacent residential structures, and 10 feet from lot lines.
