Plumbing Permits
Overview
Effective January 1, 2022: All permits must be applied for online.
Plumbing permits are required for all new plumbing and additions or alterations to existing plumbing systems, including but not limited to installing or replacing a dishwasher, water softener, water heater, and backflow preventer for a lawn irrigation system.
For gas-fired water heater replacements, a fresh air intake must be installed if not existing. Plumbers must have a current state license and bond on file with the city before commencing any work.
Backflow Prevention Devices
Backflow devices prevent contaminated water from entering the plumbing system in your home. Backflow devices in Residential homes are typically found in lawn irrigation systems and water supply lines for steam or hot water boilers. As a property owner in Chanhassen, it is required for you to check to see if you have one or more of these backflow devices at your property. If you have one of these devices, you must have the device inspected annually by a certified ASSE Backflow inspector, and the results must be submitted to the city.
A common type of backflow device is a pressure vacuum breaker (PVB). Pressure vacuum breakers prevent irrigation water from getting into your drinking water supply. The Minnesota State Plumbing Code requires pressure vacuum breakers (PVB) installed after January 23, 2016, to be tested annually by a licensed tester. A permit must be obtained before testing your device. PVB devices installed before January 23, 2016, are not required to be tested; however, manufacturers’ installation instructions have always required annual testing for all PVBs, but this was not a code requirement. If you prefer to have your PVB tested, it must be done by a licensed tester, along with the proper permits and test reports submitted to the city.
For additional information, please see the Departments of Labor and Industry’s fact sheet on backflow devices.
