Overview

Effective January 1, 2022: All permits must be applied for online.

The City of Chanhassen has adopted the 2020 Minnesota State Building Code, which adopts the 2018 International Building and Residential Codes, with amendments by reference. General contractors (or homeowners doing their own work) must obtain permits before beginning work.

  • Building Permits are required for many projects, including but not limited to new construction, additions, alterations, decks, finished basements, pools, demolition, roofing, siding, and window replacement.
  • Many projects require a detailed plan review, so allow at least ten working days for your permit to be processed.
  • Fees are paid at the time permits are issued. Current fees can be found in the table below.
  • Residential contractors must be licensed by the State of Minnesota.

An additional state surcharge applies to all building permit fees (.05% x the total cost of the job).

Note: A SAC determination or re-determination is required for all new commercial constructioncommercial remodelingcommercial additions, and/or change of use. When SAC units are charged to a project, the following fees apply:

  • SAC fee: $2,485 (2023)
  • Sewer Surcharge fee: $75 (2023)
  • Sewer Access fee: $2,480 (2024)
  • Water Access fee: $9,190 (2024)

All fees are per each SAC unit determined. Fees are subject to change. Contact the Building Inspections Division to verify current fees.
